About Elijah

We bring a passion to our teaching that makes the joy of learning contagious. My goal as a tutor is to help my students leave with a firm understanding of the material they are engaged with and develop the mindset of a lifelong student. That is, I try to teach Bishop Mandell Creighton’s philosophy that “The one real object of education is to leave a man in the condition of continually asking questions.” I want my students to take nothing at face value and dig deep into what they are learning to find not only the practical implications, but to fully understand the development of their material; all learning builds upon itself.

I understand that not everybody learns the same, so I never approach two students with the same strategies. Instead I get to know you as a person and learner in order to best support your goals.

My favorite part about mentoring in any form, whether it be tutoring, coaching, or giving advice, is that I have the opportunity to inspire a love of growth and learning in a new generation. That is, I have the opportunity to shift the focus away from the outcome and help people find joy in the process, which is ultimately more fruitful in terms of both success and satisfaction.

I love being in a position where I can show people the tools and methods that I wished I had been given sooner that make learning easier, enjoyable, and most importantly relevant.

A big part of my work is focused on Mindset and Motivation: You can not learn if deep down you do not think that you can.

Research in the field of positive psychology and neuroscience is showing, in increasingly greater detail, the ability of the brain to change itself and rewire, otherwise known as neuroplasticity. This means that at ANY age and ability level humans have the power to acquire new information and skills through physically rewiring their brains.

Unfortunately, this is not a common subject talked about or taught in schools, and as a result millions, and maybe billions, of people walk around everyday thinking lies such as ‘intelligence is fixed’ or ‘genius is born and can not be made.’ I enjoy dispelling these myths and helping students regain power over their innate ability to learn anything.

At the end of the day I want to reverse what I call the “anti-magnetic effect” of schools.

It upsets me that kids slowly walk to school, seeming almost repelled by the thought of ‘having’ to learn, and run home, seeming pulled by the ‘freedom’ of not having to learn.

I want to change that, and I want to help reverse this paradigm.

I am an avid researcher in the fields of positive psychology and the psychology of learning, giving me the ability to teach from an informed perspective despite not having a degree or traditional schooling in the subjects.

Beyond this ability to understand how different people best learn, I have delved into a variety of different subjects while in school, and beyond, such as European History, Computer Science, Calculus, Rhetoric, and many more. My curiosity and love of learning has led me to earn multiple academic awards including, but not limited to, National AP Scholar, National Merit Scholar Finalist, the James and Bonnie Reese Scholarship, and the Presidential Scholarship at Chapman University.

When working with a new student my very first step is to look at their course material prior to our first meeting , including the plan for the entirety of the class. This allows me to tailor relevant practice problems and make sure I show up prepared to best serve. I also like to know, before we meet, areas of concern in the content, learning strengths, learning weaknesses, as well as the goals and expectations my students have.

I believe that no two people learn exactly the same because no two people have the same experiences, background, and knowledge base to build upon. Getting to know you better as a person and learner gives me the ability to create a unique experience that you will thrive in.

The students I have worked with range from second graders to high school seniors, from teaching how to add and subtract in introductory math, to teaching how to differentiate in Calculus. I have also worked with high schoolers studying physics.

I coach a 4th grade lacrosse team in my off time. It is simultaneously one of the most difficult and most rewarding parts of my week. I find it difficult, but incredibly enjoyable, to find ways to teach the fundamentals of lacrosse in a way that promotes a love of the game itself over a love of just winning.

We recently had a game against our biggest rivals in the league: the Storm. In the practice leading up to the game everybody on this team was telling me that they were going to lose, and that the Storm were just too big and aggressive to beat. So I made a rule. Every time somebody said we were going to lose I made them run a lap. This was not intended to have these 4th graders focus solely on winning, but rather to help them believe in themselves. I think games, and even tests in school, are won or lost before anybody steps foot on the playing field, and they are won almost entirely through the mindset and attitude you bring: “He who thinks he can and he who thinks he can’t are both usually right.” By the end of practice my team was amped to play the storm and were telling me how they were going to give it their all and win. I am still not sure if this was just to avoid running, but it made me immensely happy that these kids were finding a way to believe in themselves.

Flash forward to the game a couple of days later. We have a great warm up, and even though it’s very early in the morning everybody shows up with energy and passion. I have everybody’s hand in my face before the game asking to get in and play and help the team, it was epic. We started out strong, but fell down by 4 points with only about 7 minutes to play. Instead of giving up, like many young teams might in this seemingly impossible situation, these kids battled. They scored one goal. Then another. Then another, while also simultaneously making stops and not letting the other team anywhere near the goal. I could feel the energy they were radiating, and I knew win or lose that these kids were something special. They were working as a team and supporting each other through the ups and downs. We scored with 30 seconds on the clock to force OT.

Before the coin toss I didn’t even need to say anything in the huddle. These 4th graders were hyping each other up and letting each other know how much they believed in themselves, it was amazing.

We won the coin toss, started with the ball, and within 15 seconds of the first whistle for over time we scored and won the game. They swarmed their goalie with hugs and laughter. Even against unbelievable odds they found a way to believe in themselves and each other, I couldn’t think of a more beautiful metaphor for life.
