About River
I am an individual tutor, I currently teach 6th grade math professionally. I graduated Brigham Young University - Hawaii with honors in Social Studies/History Education with an emphasis in Special Education. I have experience among a spectrum of disciplines.
I have been in education for a total of 3 years, both in general and special education.
I have experience teaching American Sign Language and working with the deaf, those who have autism, and various other disabilities.
I believe that learning takes place with structure, that is something I know is essential to education. I help my students be successful by giving them an environment where they are able to chunk information and have guided control over their learning.

Getting to know the student, especially if we are working one-on-one. I feel that the majority of students who struggle do so because they feel invisible in the classroom, they can get away with not participating. Getting to know the student and incorporating their interest into what we are working on, is something that I believe helps new material stick.
I get to know who I am working with, then I get to see where my student is at intellectually with the material. Foundation is essential, if my students do not have that initial foundation then I need to help build them up. Once they have a foundation then understanding of the material will come.
