About Derek

I have spent a majority of my working time and volunteer time working with youth. This has been time spent teaching, coaching, church youth programs, and outdoor education working at my local State Park! I struggled with math as a student, and now that I've taught math I want to help others get unstuck!

I get to spend time seeing youth "get it", and when the "lightbulb" grows brighter in a persons mind and their eyes show it, that's everything right there.

I worked in social services for several years and saw the high need for many of our young people to have a positive, caring adult in their life. I decided to be more proactive in this goal than reactive. I was prompted by several people who are teachers to change my career and teach because of the things I wanted out of a career.

I have my teaching certificate from Bethel University in Indiana. This is a secondary science teaching certicate however I have spent more time teaching 6th grade math. This year I am teaching 5th grade science and ELA, and will be certified to teach elementary as well.

In addition, I taught middle school science to students in summer school. I have also worked the summer as an Explorer Guide at a Michigan State Park. This involves running programs and outdoor education experiences for people of all ages.

About the lesson

I spend the first session learning the student and they can learn about me. Learning can only take place when a student feels safe and trusting of the educator, even in an online atmosphere. During this time I talk about my expectations and the student talks about theirs. Since I focus on elementary students, I highly recommend parents are involved in this process at first.

I have worked with a large range of diverse students. This includes; special education, English language learners, one on one education online, and students of various demographics.

Find someone that fits. You cannot learn from someone who you don't relate to in some way. The only thing in common might be math, but you should be able to trust that teacher before any learning can begin.

I held an event at church for young men, 3rd-5th grade, to relate Moses' time in the wilderness to challenges in our lives. We practiced casting different fishing rods and talked about the wide use of different skills to accomplish the same goals. The boys had a blast and they were the most focused I had ever seen them.

The first session, which is more of a meet and greet, is free. After this I charge $30 per hour, whether or not the whole hour is used.
