About Steven

I have been working with students in developmental capacities and tutoring capacities for 10 years, grades K-12, in public, private, and charter schools. I specialize in grades 3-11 English and Histort and grades 3-9 for Math.

When my parents separated, I started workig with students as a way to take my negative emotions and have a positive impact on people. I fell in love with the work and was good at it, and eventually education became an integral part of my life.

I have worked with students across the country on the high school level of leadership development, and have worked with kids from grades K to 12 in schools, tutoring, and after school programs in all subjects.  My specialty, however, is English and History grades 3 to 11, and Math grades 3 to 9. I have not been a classroom teacher, but I have assisted teachers in an educational and administrative capacity.  All this has been in the last 10 years, both as a student and as a young professional.

I work with students based on their individual needs and what will help them learn the material. I focus on asking questions to aid in their understanding and development. The process has been called inquiry based learning, metacognitive development, but at the end of the day it’s asking questions that the students can answer to further their understanding of the material.

I’ve worked with all types of students but a specialize in genreal education students and honors students.

I would advise two things:

1. to check the experience the teacher has. Degrees show ability in research and paperwork. Experience shows ability in dealing with people, and in education, your students are people with their own lives that all work in different ways. Experience helps you learn how to adapt to different needs.

2. Passion for what they do. Some go into tutoring as a chore, like babysitting a younger sibling. Other go into tutoring because they need the money. Some go into tutoring because they love helping people. Depending on the type of tutor you want, you want to know if they love what they do.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to be honest and upfront. The first question they should ask themselves is if they trust their teacher. If they don’t, the teacher needs to gain their trust. If they do, then they can be honest about problems they are having with subject material and not worry about being judged.

After that, they need to think through what help they need, what they are struggling with, and ask questions if they don’t know how to figure that out. It’s the teacher’s responsibility to figure out what the student needs and to help them work through it. It’s the student’s responsibility to work with the teacher and have faith that the end result will lead to an understanding in the material.
