About Weston
My tutoring stands out because my goal is not just to teach my students how to solve a problem, but also why we solve the problem the way we do. Through my own experiences studying physics and math, I have found that knowing why something works the way it does not only helps in remembering how to solve problems, but also provides a good foundation that will make more advanced content easier to learn later on.
The thing I enjoy the most about working with students is simply being able to pass on my passion for math and physics to my students. Seeing a student's excitement when they solve a problem correctly after previously struggling with a concept is incredibly satisfying to me, as I myself have experienced that same feeling in my own studies.
I first started tutoring during my junior year of high school by simply helping my friends with their homework when they needed advice. Then, during my senior year, I was offered a position to work as a Teacher's Assistant for AP Physics C, where I was required to put in at least 3 hours of tutoring each week throughout the school year.
I am a recent high school graduate, graduating from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) earlier this year with an unweighted GPA of 4.000, and a weighted GPA of 4.837. I will be attending UNC Chapel Hill in the fall, and plan to major in mathematics and physics. During my time at NCSSM, I took courses in AP Calculus BC, multivariable calculus, number theory, combinatorics, graph theory, AP Physics C, astrophysics, AP Chemistry, and other similar high level courses that I would be willing to provide tutoring in. For all the AP courses listed above, I subsequently received a 5 on the AP tests associated with them. During my senior year, I worked as a Teacher's Assistant for the AP Physics C teacher at NCSSM, Dr. Wheeler, providing tutoring to students in various levels of introductory algebra based and calculus based physics courses, and was offered a similar position as a math tutor for AP Calculus BC. Outside of STEM courses, I have also studied Spanish for the past three years, and received a 4 on the AP Spanish Language exam, as well as the third highest score in the state for non-native speakers on the National Spanish Exam in 2018, and would be willing to do some tutoring on introductory Spanish.

When working with a new student, I first like to get a good idea of where the student is at, as far as understanding the material that they need help with. I attempt to determine if they have a solid understanding of the core content, and simply need help with some of the more challenging problems, if they only need to review the topics, or if they need to be retaught the content from the ground up. After I come to an understanding of where the student is at, I try to fill in any gaps in their core knowledge of the subject that may be relevant to the content at hand. My end goal of tutoring any student is to eventually get them to the point where they are confident enough with the material to where they understand it completely, and understand not just how to solve a problem, but also why each problem is solved the way it is, as knowing the reasoning behind the process makes it easier to remember, and also provides the intuition and core understanding of the content that will make more advanced material easier to understand.
I have worked with students of all skill levels in introductory physics and calculus courses. In some cases, I have only needed to demonstate example problems for students to be comfortable with the material, but in other cases I have had to essentially teach students the content from the ground up.
