Initially an review of their work-to-date, their goals and a realistic appraisal of time they can put into shooting on a daily basis. The first imperative is to establish a daily shooting, editing and post-production rhythm that will seque into solid professional practice. Work and assignments are the best teachers of all. Establishing how to work daily while self-critiquing their results as they are sending them into the world is the first goal for beginners through advanced. Once that is established a weekly review of their best 12 images. Learning to edit down to a small number of images teaches discipline and editorial skills, particularly difficult task in the digital age. Taking the chosen images to their best outcome is a technical matter of post-production skills so the emphasis of lessons then switches to how to optimize the image via photoshop and inner vision. An aid to this is increasing the student's awareness of the vast vocabularly of visual possibility by suggesting photographers whose work they should view from both the present and the past. At this point encouraging on-line portfolio presence if not a website becomes an imperative. If the goal is merely for personal knowledge and pleasure, an on-line album is encouraged. If the goal is professional work, then also encouraging starting to work while they maintain an on-line and ever-updated presence.
