About Bob

I like working with people to improve their photography. I taught creative photography and photojournalism at Drake University some years back and have given clinics and presented slide shows over the years to various groups, professional and hobbyist. I like to watch things, especially people. Patience is a key to coming up with good photographs, particularly of living things. Like nature — wildlife and landscapes — people in their environments. Several years ago during a long career as a Des Moines Register photographer, during a judging for the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography where I was a finalist, judges referred to my work as "unusual." I have considered that a compliment, that, along with work colleagues saying I could make good pictures out of nothing. I look for the unusual and sometimes that includes humor.

I enjoy working with people who sincerely want to improve their craft.

For Drake University, the journalism dean asked me to create a new course and teach it.

BA in Journalism, Drake University; U.S. Army Still Photography training course, Honor Graduate

About the lesson

Either talk by phone, if the studen chooses, or email which I prefer, to learn what exact aspect of photography they'd like to pursue — beginning photography, composition, shooting people, working to enhanse photos in the computer, shooting sports, approaching people you don't know to photograph them.
