About Shelly

I was a nursing professor for 6 years, and the part I enjoyed most was working with students one-on-one. I love helping students of all ages. I enjoy it when things CLICK for them. My first photo student was a a co-worker who had just bought herself a new camera. She had a Canon. Once explained in a calm, patient manner she was able to grasp the information fairly quickly. Since then I love sharing my knowledge with other photographers to help them realize their dream. All without having them try and piece information together that they find on the internet, and then try to make sense of it all.

I've been a photographer for 40 years, the last 12 working as a professional. I began in high school, then in college to learn the art of photography. After I had my first child, I started taking classes everywhere I could around Wisconsin inorder to learn more. I've mastered the camera, now I love learning new techniques and often listen to podcasts about Photoshop or Lightroom tips and tricks. I like to be current so I research everything that comes to mind!

About the lesson

I like to speak with the student over the phone at first to see what they would like to learn. It's not always possible, so sometimes I spend the first 15 minutes of time in person. You will receive a full lesson after that time.

As of right now, I haved worked with several older adults. They tend to have time for their hobby once they have more time in their schedule. I'm very patient and don't like to overwhelm my students, however, I give them enough to learn until we meet again.

Try and find someone who will meet you where you are. I always assess the student's current knowledge and teach just what they need to learn. If I dont have to start at the beginning with apeture, shutter speed and ISO, I will just touch on it and move forward.

I recently had a newborn photoshoot. I had the little girl posed on her tummy facing the camera. I had a black background and I had placed her in a peacock colored tutu. It would have been a beautiful shot had she stayed there and didn't fuss. When we were just about to give up she looked at the camera crying and then put her head down. That was the picture the family had chosen to enlarge. It was a ballerina baby telling us that she had had enough and it was now the end! Head down!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Im a visual learner and most creative minds are as well. I have visual handouts that clearly explain all of the information that I am teaching. This allows them to go over these in their own environment after the lesson. Students should always assess the teacher's teaching style. You can tell how their personality is when you speak on the phone for the first time. If they speak super fast...chances are you do not want to go with them!

I charge $45 per lesson, which generally is a little over an hour, depending how you are grasping the information I am providing. You can purchase a package of 6 lessons for $240, which is a $30 savings.
