About Rich
I am a graduate of New York Institute of Photography. This education has given me a real leg up on understanding the very basics of photography, all the way to the small details that make so much difference in creating a great photograph. I understand how hard it is to understand lighting without the benefit of a studio in which to learn proper lighting set-up. In my studio you will have the chance to have hand on experience. You will have the opportunity to take mind boggleing photos with the the right lighting so you know what equipment you really need.
I love having a blank canvas to work with. When you learn to create a photograph it changes everything.I love the ability to pick the settings create the Photograph I want, the the photograph that most photographers settle for. I am not talking about point and shoot, i am talking about creating the exact look I want. I can teach you how to have perfectly focused shot from front to back, or the beautiful portrait with the backgroung perfectly blurred. Seeing the look on a students face when they look at a pnoto they just captured with exactly the image the imagined is what puts a smile on my face
I was employed at a ranch that worked with "at risk" youth and found that they were very interested in taking photographs. The management was also very pleased because they had to earn the right to those lessons by following the rules.

First off I like to find out a little bit about the student, whether they want to be a professional photographer or a hobbyist. Why this makes a large difference is the equipment and also the level of commitment. I also like to know the type of subject they like to photograph. The lenses used for different subjects make a difference. A person who mostly wants to photograph landscapes will not want a portrait lens and vice-versa.
I have taught young men from the age of thirteen, all the way to a couple of seniors.
Find a teacher that is able to communicate the principles of photography rather that one who is unsure themselves. Make sure that the instructor can tell you why you use a particular setting or lense, and what the effect will be if you change the setting.
One young lady took a photograph on a trip to the zoo that was incredible. I told her that photograph was every bit as good as any that I have ever taken. We had a hard time getting her smile into the car it was so big.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First always what do you want to do. Then ask the teacher if they are capable of teaching that.

I like how he taught me the difference between taking a picture and a photograph. This was my first lesson and I learned a lot.

This is dependent on what level of photography they are interested in. If the student wants to shoot mostly outdoor landscape, flowers, and wildlife I will teach more about depth of field, natural lighting. If their main focus is on portrature I will focus more on studio lighting.
Either way I want to deliver on what the student needs in order to take the shots they want. I would spend much more time with someone seeking to learn studio work than someone who likes the outdoors type, simply because of the complexity of studio lighting.
