About Alys

Alys Keretses is both an enthusiastic teacher and expressive performer. After completing studies in piano performance at the University of South Carolina, she began teaching in Baltimore, MD in 2013 and has maintained a successful piano studio ever since. Her teaching philosophy is centered around relationships. When students feel known, respected, valued, celebrated when they succeed, and safe to make mistakes, they will become confident, joyful musicians. The things I enjoy most about teaching are building relationships with my students and watching them overcome challenges. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to see a student's confidence grow as they meet challenges and conquer them. Even when a student learns a lesson the hard way, such as not performing their best in a recital or competition, helping them learn through that experience to have a stronger sense of personal motivation is very powerful. Then, seeing them take that motivation to exceed their own expectations of what they could do is pure magic.

I began teaching while I was finishing my music degree and taught at two music schools in central SC during my junior and senior years. After graduation, I moved to Baltimore, MD with my husband and began teaching piano lessons full time.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of South Carolina. I graduated summa cum laude in 2013.

About the lesson

For new students, it is best to set up a trial lesson (offered for free!) to get to know each other and discuss how lessons work, policies, what materials you need, etc. Then we will set up a weekly lesson time and begin.

I have taught students of all ages, from 4 to 80+. I prefer to teach students ages 5 and up, but will consider teaching 4 year olds following a trial lesson.

The best musical experiences come from teachers who are thoroughly experienced and committed to all aspects of the student's educational and personal needs and goals. When students feel known, respected, valued, celebrated when they succeed, and safe to make mistakes, they will become confident, joyful musicians.

I performed for the 2019 Best Western International Conference in Washington, D.C. and had the opportunity to arrange a piece to be performed during the CEO's speech. It was a unique opportunity to work with an esteemed business and a fabulous creative team and I hope to do it again in the future!
