About Matthew
I have been teaching piano for 30 years. I am different than other piano teachers because I can teach many different styles including classical, pop, jazz, blues, and gospel. I can also assist teach accompanying, composition, songwriting, arranging, and am a vocal coach.
I enjoy helping students reach levels of artistry that they thought were not possible.
I started teaching in Louisiana at the prep department at Southern University and at Baker Music.
I have a Bachelor's degree in music education with a focus on piano from Southern University and a master's degree in curriculum, instruction, and assessment from Walden University. I have 30 years of experience as a piano teacher, 25 years of experience as a public school music teacher, 30 years as a church musician, and 35 years as a gigging musician. I started lessons at age 7 and consider myself a lifelong student, always challenge myself to learn new domains of performing and teaching.

I hold a complimentary interview lesson. I assess the student's goals, natural gifts, and learning styles. I try to be very affirming and positive.
I have worked with all different students from many varied backgrounds.
Make sure that the teacher has the experience and desire to help you achieve your goals, not just the teachers' goals.
I was particularly proud of how well my students performed at their spring recital.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should have thought about why they want to learn music and how much time they are willing to put in.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
My 1st grader started taking piano lessons last fall, and Matt has been amazing with him. He's naturally encouraging and patient and knows how to teach young kids! My son looks forward to lessons every week.
My daughter has been taking piano lessons from Matt Edwards for 3 years. She loves his style of teaching. He exhibits genuine interest in her growth as a piano player and always includes her input in song choice, etc. It is because of Matt that my daughter enjoys playing the piano! We would recommend Matt for anyone interested in learning to play the piano.
Matthew is a thoughtful and sensitive teacher who knows how to engage with young pianists. He effectively guides them toward more expressive, musical playing. I also appreciate his way of conveying solid expectations without being rigidly "by the book."
Matt Edwards is hands down the best piano teacher I've ever met. He taught my sons starting at 5 years old, and my older son is now planning to major in music as a college student, while my younger son was just offered a position as a Junior Counselor at Sonatina International Piano Camp. Matt is an outstanding pianist, with a complete classical repertoire as well as an expertise in ragtime, jass, improv and blues. His knowledge of music theory and music history is excellent, and he teaches these pieces right along with piano playing. As an educator, his musical pedagogy really sets him apart from other pianists. He knows exactly how to approach students of all ages with positivity, encouragement, and fun. He clearly enjoys his work. My children's lives have been changed by having the benefit of Matt's piano instruction in their formative years. He is the best piano teacher I've ever known, and is a wonderful person. You cannot go wrong with Matt Edwards as your piano teacher.
Matt is an excellent piano teacher. He is well versed in all aspects of the instrument and music . He communicates well his understanding of performance, accompaniment and technique. Matt excels in all types of music. I would recommend him for all ages and skill levels.
Matt is an intuitive, kind, intelligent, and attentive teacher. He has firm expectations and communicates them gently and with good humor. He teaches a variety of styles and works hard to find the best ways to motivate his students. Lessons are serious and focused, but always with a healthy dose of fun. He's also a helluva nice guy.
Matt is such a patient and kind teacher. He always makes you feel smart and is very encouraging. He breaks down the lesson measure by measure and if needed, note by note. Together you work through rhythms first, by patting, clapping, and speaking them. Then isolating both hands, before putting them together.
I have always been rather nervous during any sort of lesson, but Matt really cultivated an atmosphere of peace and fun. The love he has for teaching and helping new learners is evident in his teaching. I would highly recommend him to students of all levels!View more recommendations
