About Matthew

WHY STUDY MUSIC WITH MATT?

With a highly versatile musical background as a hornist, pianist, pedagogue, a degree in music education, and training in music theory and composition, I have been teaching private lessons in the Cincinnati area for several years.

I am well-versed in teaching students of all ages and experience levels.

I work to make lessons fun and enjoyable while also making sure we are working hard and always learning!

I always cater private lessons to meet you or your students’ individual needs and musical goals—whether these be simply to learn music for fun or to become a professional performer.

We play music because we love it and it is an art form. My goal is to help you realize your dreams in becoming the artist you want to be!

I have been teaching privately in the area for almost nine years and have watched several students grow from beginning pianists to strong, nearly-independent musicians.

I earned a doctorate (and master's) degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from The Ohio State University. I also have an extensive background in Music Theory, which informs my approach to teaching.

About the lesson

I like to assess where the student is coming from. If they are at the very beginning of their musical journeys, I begin by orienting them to the piano and the musical staff (the lines and notes on sheet music!). For children beginners, we begin on the black keys and play using only finger numbers rather than any note names. For older or adult beginners, we begin on middle C and work our way outwards from there.

I typically suggest that beginning students not worry about an "amount of time" to practice each week, but instead, focus on a number of correct repetitions for each exercise. Practice time is more valuable when measured qualitatively than quantitatively.

Carol

Matt is that rare combination of impeccable, world class musician; and infinitely patient instructor.

He has taught 5 of my children ages 5-16 and he managed to alter his approach to meet the needs of each (very challenging) student; even meeting the challenge of keeping them fully engaged through quarantine.

The two oldest were accepted into the piano program at SCPA thanks to Matt.
