About Susan

I love to teach piano. I have taught for many years, and have a Bachelors degree in Piano Pedagogy. Virtual lessons became available during Covid 19 and are still available to my students.

Please visit my website: cobbpianostudio.com

Cobb Piano Students meet for workshops each month and 2 recitals a year. We enjoy performing for each other and work hard to reach our goals with fun and support along the way.

For students living further away, I offer Virtual Interactive piano lessons.

Prior to moving to Lake County, I was on the piano faculty for almost 10 years at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music in Southern California. I taught a large studio with students ranging from 6 through adult, at all levels and styles of piano. Many students took annual evaluations and enjoyed the benefits of frequent performances at the conservatory.

I love teaching a comprehensive piano pedagogy. I teach Note Reading, Keyboard Technique, Theory, Sight Reading, Ear Training, Composition, Repertoire in all styles Classical, and of course, Performance. My style of teaching initiates independent work from the beginning. Learning to solve challenges early, helps all ages gain confidence in their abilities as a musician. This helps the mind focus, grow creatively, and enhances the whole person, educationally and emotionally.

Working individually with each student affords me the chance to get to know how each person differs and I can teach according to those needs and desires. From young beginners through adults, I love the challenge and relationship we build together creating artistry from the very start. The joy experienced as each student grows in their love and understanding for music and their instrument is the most precious gift!

About the lesson

A triangle of success: student, parent, teacher. Young and beginning students learn to play across the entire keyboard from the start. Focus from large to fine motor skills, using the body correctly, and fun reading skills are learned early. And repertoire is key.
Tuition includes monthly student performance workshops where students enjoy friendships and musical encouragement. A balance of inspiration, trust and challenge, and an education in all styles of art music.

Susan VanWyk is an exceptional educator. She has a passion for music, and develops strong relationships with her students. The music she selects for her students is based on what they need to know, and their interests. It’s also selected to introduce students to a broad swath of genres, musical styles, and historical influences. I have seen continuous growth in my daughter as a musician over many years as a result of Susan’s tutelage. I highly recommend Susan as a piano teacher for anyone looking to grow as a musician.
