About Tim

Want to learn how to play your favorite songs, accompany your bandmates, or play chords? Want to learn how to start soloing or take your improvising to the next level? Or do you want to improve your reading skills and knowledge of music theory?

With Tim at Youth Musical Theater Corporation, I cater lessons toward your areas of interest, with a curriculum that is flexible and individualized. I'll get you playing music with and without a book, so you can learn music quickly, become a well-rounded musician, and have fun in the process! I take students of all levels and backgrounds, beginner to advanced. Styles include: jazz, classical, rock, blues, R&B, and many other improvisatory music styles.

I’m a licensed Massachusetts educator and former Graduate Teaching Fellow of the University of Oregon, where I earned my Master of Music degree. In 2015 and 2016, I was featured in DownBeat Magazine as a winner of their national jazz composers/arrangers competition. Visit me playing around Fall River sometime!

My rate is $25 per half-hour. After the first 3 lessons, I normally ask students to switch to payments at the beginning of each month (same per-lesson rate) to make things easier.

By far, my favorite part of what I do is seeing students perform and make their favorite songs come to life. I also love challenging them in ways they've never encountered before, such as practicing with their eyes closed to improve piano fingering and kinesthetic awareness, or playing simon-says with musical phrases to improve aural recognition. Not only does this teach broader valuable life skills, but it also keeps things interesting!

About the lesson

I teach fundamental skills in order to set you up to learn way beyond lessons with me. The focus is on: playing by ear, improvising, developing theoretical skills, perfecting technique, reading music, ingraining good feel and rhythm, learning how to practice and isolate problems, and loving many styles and sounds.

I have worked with students of all ages, including: college students, kindergarteners, elementary middle and high school students, working folks, retired... etc. etc. etc.

Find a teacher who best fits with you, and realize that there are other options. In my studio, it’s all about enjoyment. Forget the old-school sterile lesson format. I want you to be learning, progressing, and most importantly, having fun. Together we’ll work towards what you find most interesting.

In 2016, I created "The Tim Carrigg Orchestra" consisting of 20 musicians (7 violinists, 3 violists, 4 cellists, trumpet, keyboards, electric guitar, electric bass, drums and electronics). I wrote an hours worth of music for the large ensemble in a variety of styles, and promoted the group for performing around Appleton Wisconsin. It took roughly 9 months to compose the music and manage the rehearsals and performances.
