About Kathryn

I can play five instruments; with double French horn being my primary, I can also play single French horn, mellophone, valve trombone, and baritone/euphonium and give lessons for all of these. I have been in concert band and choir since fifth grade, jazz band since eighth grade, and jazz choir since ninth grade. Currently, I am attending North Central College and majoring in Jazz Studies and Theatre and have a minor in Studio Art. My passion lies in music, education, and helping and servicing others. I have quite a sunny disposition, have been told that I am too happy, and am always smiling.

I taylor my lesson to each individual based on their interests and areas that need improvement. I will accept new or novice players up to intermediate players of all ages. Check out my LinkedIn profile! (concealed information)

What I most enjoy about what I do is helping others with their musicality while also improving mine simultaneously. I love seeing the light bulb go off in a student's head when they understand a new concept. Also, being a musician is flat out amazing, and you have to be a musician and put that first before you can do any other music job, like being a conductor.

I originally thought about giving lessons to spread the love of and passion for music to prospective students and to then incubate their skills and their potential. I started working with Taylor Robinson Music Company, and then I decided to branch off and do freelance work.

I am on track to getting a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies; although, I did start out as an Instrumental Music Education major.

My personal private education includes French horn and valve trombone/baritone/euphonium lessons with Steve Holland at Galena Unit School District #120 and French horn lessons with Dan O'Connell at North Central College.

I have performance experience with all of the following groups: concert band, marching and pep band, and jazz band in middle and high school, Community Band of Galena in high school, and Community Band of Aurora in college.

About the lesson

I offer one free thirty minute lesson with the purchase of one thirty minute lesson, one sixty minute lesson, or any one of the package deals to determine if we will be a good match.

I have worked with novice students, although I teach novice and intermediate students.

I would advise the student to consider all of the following factors when looking to hire a private lesson instructor: personality compatibility, style of teaching, instructor's experience, flexibility in scheduling and creating content/goals for the student, and pricing, if necessary.

I recently went to the Illinois Music Educators' Conference (IMEC) and attended numerous workshops on a wide variety of topics including brass techniques, composition, percussion techniques, and working with students who have learning disabilites. IMEC was so fun, and it was quite a valuable learning experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) What am I looking to accomplish by taking lessons?
2) Am I flexible and willing enough to allow the instructor to guide and run the lessons, rather than only work on my own interests?
3) Am I prepared for constructive criticism?

4) Am I willing to put in the time to practice to improve my overall playing and musicality?
