About Alison

Bel Canto Vocal Arts is a warm and inviting home studio dedicated to helping students achieve ease and freedom in their singing through solid vocal technique. Alison has been teaching Classical and Broadway voice lessons since 2003, and has seen students through Broadway callbacks to top University vocal programs. Specializing in audition preparation for college and career-bound voice students, Alison also enjoys instructing motivated singers of all abilities.

An active professional singer, Alison has recently performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, the Caramoor International Music Festival, and various opera companies throughout the northeast. She was a first place district winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and named "Best Female Performer" by Opera Online for her performance in Opera North's "Il Trovatore". A frequent concertizer, Alison has performed at the National Arts Club by special invitation, and also featured in a Gala Concert at Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, accompanied by Dalton Baldwin. Alison earned her Master of Music Degree, with honors, from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, and is a proud member of the American Guild of Musical Artists.

Additionally, Alison teaches beginning piano (ages 7 and up.)

I love hearing the progress that my students make through their hard work! Hearing the beauty of a voice emerge, and seeing the excitement of a student as they hear it too is tremendously rewarding. I love getting a phone call or an email telling me that a student "got the role"!

I attained my Master of Music degree, with honors, from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. Additionally, I studied at the Academie International d'Éte de Nice in France, and completed the CAP21 Musical Theater Intensive Program at NYU. At SUNY New Paltz, I completed a study in the Meisner Technique of Acting. My education is well-rounded and suited to teaching Classical singing technique, Broadway style, and dramatic coaching. As an active performer, my professional experience encompasses leading roles in Opera, Musical Theatre, and on the concert stage. For the past 16 years, I have been helping singers, step by step, to reach their performance goals. We have a great time doing it, too!

About the lesson

The first lesson is an important time in assessing what each student's particular vocal needs are. The ultimate goal for any singer should be to develop an instrument that is even throughout the range - a sound that requires little effort and tension to produce, so that the singer is free to perform with expression, and not focus on technique. (Of course, a strong technical foundation is required to get there, and that's where I come in!)

No two voices are alike, and identifying the unique challenges present in each voice, and helping my singers to overcome these challenges ("untangle the knots", I like to say) is incredibly gratifying. When one of my singers has a breakthrough, no one cheers louder than I do!
