About Sal
I play a unique style of music called "free improvisation", a genre that developed in the late 60's out of free jazz and modern classical music. It is improvised music that is less about concrete structure and playing specific prewritten notes, and more about tonal texture, feeling, raw emotion, and playing something that has never been played before. This kind of playing can be especially more cathartic, theraputic, and meditative than traditional piano playing. I believe it opens the student up to a much larger world of sound. There will be no hotcross buns or books in these lessons, just beautiful, emotive piano improvisations, right from the start.
I enjoy playing and teaching piano because it can be extremely therapeutic and healing. Playing music with others is proven to strengthen emotional bonds, and the improvisation techniques i teach makes this even more possible.
I started teaching experimental piano techniques in Eugene, Oregon in 2016 as a way to spread what I believe to be a very theraputic, easy, beautiful style of piano playing that is not known to most people.
I have been playing the piano for 11 years, since the age of seven. I became obsessed with improvisation & quit formal lessons at the age of 17. I went on to study sound art, scuplutre & performance art at The Ohio University, graduating with a BFA. Since then I have performed hundreds of live shows, playing a myriad of instruments & musical genres, always employing heavy improvisation. I am now nestled at home during the pandemic, writing & recording a full length solo piano record, & teaching piano online.

I treat every student differently. There is no one way to teach. Every person has a unique way of learning. If i have to generalize, I have new students do the same as old students, I have them play! Whether you come to me as a veteran player who wants to learn how to improv, or someone completely new to the instrument. Nothing matters as much as playing.
Be as open as possible.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why they want to learn the techniques. Why they want to learn the piano. Why they want to learn an instrument. What do they really want.
