About Keira

Hello!

My name is Keira Wilson and I am a 17-year-old teacher who has learned from the well-known Taubman teacher Alison Cheroff (my mother) for almost my entire life. We use the Taubman approach as a way of playing piano naturally and without pain. We have our own beginning book that starts piano students on the note "A" instead of "middle C" to correlate with the alphabet -- makes sense, right?? The piano book is beautifully illustrated and has had a 100% success rate.

I am looking forward to getting your children started. As a student, I will be charging less than an adult teacher but I have the skills and knowledge to successfully teach your kid. I currently have a thriving 8-year-old student who loves our online lessons.

I love playing piano and music all-around! I have been playing since I was three and have never stopped loving the piano. I also sing, and have gotten top scores in music festivals. I love the music world.

I have been observing my mom teach for years, and got asked to teach through a babysitting job. I have had students since then.

I have been a student of the Taubman technique for 14 years. I have also done musical training in Italy abroad, and participated in numerous musical ensembles.

About the lesson

I start every student out with just identifying the groups of two and three black keys on their piano. They go up and down, seeing that pattern. Then I introduce them to the note "A". Once they know A, they can find any other note! They love this suprise. Then we dive into the first page of the "Banana Book" which is the beginner book I teach by. The first song is extremely simple, so the student doesn't feel overwhelmed. I talk about how to place the wrist and fingers freely on the piano. At the end of each lesson we play the color/animal improv game, where they think of an animal or color and compose a little piece about it, and I guess what it is. We progress through the book, introducing sight reading and a little music theroy.

I have worked with beginner students in the 7y/o-10y/o range.

Details

I find two 35-minute sessions a week work best for the child. I charge between $19-22 per 35-minute session, coming out to approximately $40/hour. For a Taubman-trained teacher this is very reasonable.
