About Mery

Hi, my name is Mery Leon García. I am a former bilingual school teacher as well as a retired New York City Oublic School Principal. I taught spanish speaking students for many years as well as led schools for more than 18 years. Spanish is my native language and my approach to teaching is about immersion and culture. Learning a second language requires more than just phrases and words, it is about understanding the culture and traditions of the language we aim to learn. Conversation, practice and commitment makes the learning enjoyable and fruitful.

In my years of experience as a classroom teacher and second language instruction, the engagement of both the teacher and student makes the learning exciting and meaningful. Learning a second language requires practice and commitment. Finding common ground and affinity provides the motivation and enthusiasm to develop understanding and fluency.

I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Spanish from Queens College and later on received my masters degree in Education from Lehman College. I started teaching in 1990 and worked with students in grades K-3 for seven years. I taught Spanish speaking students learning English as a second language. I continued my education in school administration and supervision at City College which led me to become a school assistant principal and then school principal. I retired from the New York City Department of Education in 2018 after having served for 31 years.

I am a former bilingual school teacher as well as a former New York City School Principal. I am currently retired. I taught bilingual students in Spanish and English for many years as I delivered subject area instruction for each grade.

About the lesson

Establishing a rapport with the student and identifying their needs to establish course outline and schedule. An initial zoom meeting to get to know the student and level of fluency in the language is essential.

Elementary, middle and high school students.

Teaching is more than just delivering instruction, it is an innate passion for the work and a commitment for the continued success of both parties.

School graduations are dear to me as they represent the culmination of years of dedication and commitment on the part of the students and teachers who helped them achieve those milestones.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are they looking to achieve and why? How much are they willing to invest of their time and effort?
