About Alison
Spanish is one of my greatest passions. I've been learning it, teaching it, using it, and working & living it for over 20 years!
I lived in Spain for 6+ years (5 years in Madrid, 1 year in a small town in Andalucia, and one semester studying abroad in Sevilla).
During my last stay in Spain, I obtained my MA in Spanish Applied Linguistics with New York University (Madrid campus). While there, I tutored the NYU undergrads in Spanish through a university internship grant. Prior to that, I was teaching Spanish at a language school in New York City (Fluent City).
In addition to Spanish, my other passion is social work. When I haven't been studying/teaching Spanish, I have worked directly with Spanish-speaking populations (primarily immigrants from Latin America). Tutoring is a side job I love doing while I obtain the clinical hours needed to become a licensed psychotherapist.
Having many years of exposure to both Latin American (including Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, Mexican) and peninsular Spanish dialects, I have a well-rounded vocabulary and fluency. My academic use is well-balanced by my colloquial use of Spanish as well (slang, swear words, expressions). My accent is undeniably madrileño, but I can teach both region-specific or a more neutral Spanish. One of my favorite things is to really get into phonetics and pragmatics -- I can help you with improve your accent and understand the appropriate use of the language so that you sound less like a gringo!
I tutor all levels, from total beginner to advanced levels. I most excel working with young adults/adults, but am more than happy to work with children and teens as well.
I am warm, friendly, and patient. My teaching style is dynamic and playful. More than anything, I love Spanish and I am confident that my passion will help you learn (and learn to love!) Spanish as well.
BA in Psychology with minor in Hispanic Studies (graduated 2009 from Boston College)
MA in Spanish Applied Linguistics (graduated 2015 from New York University in Madrid)
I have had 4 language teaching experiences, teaching either Spanish or English (Taiwan/Spain/NYC)
Having learned Spanish since the age of 13, I know how to teach Spanish because I know how I've excelled learning it. In addition, having grown up in an immigrant houeshold as well, I've spent my life helping my parents work on their English fluency, which has given me valuable skills as a language teacher.

We will start by having a thorough discussion of your interests, strengths, and goals. It's important for me to understand what's motivating your desire to seek tutoring. I also want to find out the ways you best learn -- through a structured academic curriculum? Or through more conversational/informal lessons? Do you like worksheets and drills, or do you prefer more creative exercises and assignments? This will help me best tailor my lessons to you.
Unless you're a complete beginner, we'll do some casual assessment so I get a feel for your baseline level. Then I'll work on a general educational plan that we can follow, depending on how long you intend to be in tutoring (weeks, months, etc.). Everything is flexible and everything is discussed transparently with you, to make sure you're on board.
I have experience working with students ranging from early elementary school to adults.
If I were looking for a language tutor, I would want to ensure:
1. Is this person passionate about the language? Can I feel the passion and excitement come through in the way they teach?
2. Does this person tap into the empathy/memory of having once been a student themselves?
3. Is this person closely attuned to my interest and progress level? Is the person willing to re-calibrate lessons as they get to know me better? Or does it feel like this is a one-size-fits-all lesson?
