About Yajhaira
Spanish is my native language, so in high school I took French, thinking I didn't need to learn more Spanish. In college, I took a Spanish test which would make me exempt from taking any language courses if I passed. I failed miserably. I learned that there is a tremendous difference between conversational Spanish and written Spanish. I started to read everything I could in Spanish until I became proficient in written and spoken Spanish. Thus, to a degree I am self- taught, but confident in my language and teaching skills nonetheless. I have served as a Spanish translator in churches and jobs I've worked in for over nine years and I have created flyers and translated documents and voice transcripts from English to Spanish for several employers within that time frame.
i got started as a Sunday school teacher. Then I started leading other small groups, both in church settings and employment places.
I have served as a translator of both written material and spoken word for over nine years. My teaching experience is mostly ministerial. I have taught Sunday school lessons to elementary and middle school children on and off for the past ten years. However, I also conducted workshops for diabetic patients of varying ages for about a year through a Medicare research program I was a part of in 2014.

The first step is to learn what type of learning the student is (I.e. visual, hands-on, etc). Then, assess the student's goal(s) concerning the particular subject in question in order to prioritize and focus on the student's needs.
I have worked with elementary school children, young adults (high school-collège) and senior citizens.
Although hiring a tutor who masters his/her teaching subject and has an impressive educational background is important and attractive, also look for empathy, passion and a growth mindset in your candidate.
I always share with my two boys that I had my first job at fifteen. My oldest son always wants to do things bigger, better and faster than me, so as soon as he turned fourteen last month, he said he wanted to get a job. I said "no problem", but what will you pursue? He did not know. Within a few days of that conversation, an opportunity was presented to him to tutor a nine-year old child and he jumped on it. I knew he would do well because his brother is also nine years old and he does a very good job helping him with school work. He's doing even better than I thought and it's truly satisfying to see myself in his eyes.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I find that often times students say they don't understand something or that it's hard when they find a subject boring or they're lazy to do the work. So, as a student, ask yourself: Do I really need help understanding the material, or do I just not want to do the work? If you really don't understand and need help, ask your teacher whether he/she can teach you that which you are struggling with in a different way. Also, highlight, circle or bookmark specific questions or problems that need extra attention or are confusing to you and point them out to the teacher. Ask for extra time before or after class for help or clarification from your teacher as many times as needed. Don't feel like you're bothering the instructor or that you look dumb when you ask too many questions! Your persistence only shows diligence and teachers love a diligent student.
