About Heather

Experienced in teaching swim lessons for all ages and all skill levels. I am CPR, lifeguard, and Water Safety Instructor certified, and have been teaching all levels for the past six years through a city swim program. I swam competitively for 12 years, and am knowledgeable in all four strokes.

I grew up swimming, practically living in the pool, and I have a passion for teaching, therefore, being a swim teacher is something I feel I was born to do. With my young, beginner swimmers, I like to mix learning the fundamentals of swimming with a little fun, so that they learn to enjoy the water, rather than be afraid of it. I also enjoy teaching more intermediate swimmers, focusing on refining their stroke and building their endurance.

I started teaching as a summer job. Since I had multiple years of experience in swimming, I wanted to be a lifeguard and swim teacher. I have continued teaching ever since.

I swam competitively from the age of 7 through the end of high school. Since high school, I have worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the City of Whittier. (6 years)

About the lesson

First, I assess the skills of the student, and then i tailor my lessons on what needs to be worked on the most. For newer swimmers, repetition is key, since we are trying to train their motor functions to act a certain way. For more intermediate swimmers, I tend to focus one or two techniques that need to be improved per lesson.

I have worked with all age ranges, from parent/child classes and preschoolers to adults wanting to learn how to swim. I am also experienced in working with skill levels from beginners to more advanced swimmers. I have also worked with swimmers with disabilities, as well as, students who do not speak English.

Find a teacher that looks like someone you can trust. When it comes to swimming, I have found that, especially for beginner swimmers, trust between the teacher and student is essential.

I find joy in even the smallest accomplishments. Until recently, one of my students was afraid of diving (head first) into the water. However, we kept on working on dives, and eventually, she dove in head first. It wasn't the prettiest drive, but after all our attempts, I knew that she had conquered her fear.
