About Jennifer

I have been a private and public school orchestra/violin teacher for the past 12 years. My teaching experiences in both fields have helped me learn about different teaching strategies and how to inspire and explain concepts in multiple different ways to accomodate to different learning styles. My passion for teaching musicianship and incorporating important skills such as responsibility and developing a strong work ethic set me apart from other teaching studios.

I went to graduated from UCLA with a degree in Ethnomusicology and Music Education. After teaching public school band and orchestra, I went back to pursue my Masters Degree in Violin Performance with a focus on Violin Pedegogy. I am currently living in Oak Park, IL and taught the award winning orchestra program in Wheaton, IL. In the past I have also been awarded Teacher of the Year at the school and District Levels. In addition to being a Suzuki trained student, haivng finished all repertoire from levels 1-10, I have also been Suzuki Teacher Trained and Certified in teaching Violin Repertoire Volumes 1-4 by Mrs. Judy Bossuat. I plan on continuing and finishing certification up to the 10th volume.

I love seeing the learning process taking place. I also enjoy watching students gain more confidence in their musical abilities. This confidence affects other aspects in their life (school, participation in other activies). This is one of the main reasons why music can be such a positive influence. Music then becomes a very personal activity for the child. Watching and being a part of this process brings me great joy and fulfillment.

I got started in teaching in college after becoming involved in an after school tutoring program that taught in Compton, CA. Although it was a struggle to teach in the community I absolutely loved coming back to the kids and their positive attitudes leading up to their final performance. When I began my student teaching at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA I loved it from the minute I stepped into the classroom. From that moment on, I fell in love with teaching and the education process and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

I have my Bachlors degree in Music Education (emphasis on string education) and Ethnomusicology from University of California, Los Angeles. During my time there, I participated in many teaching programs in addition to my student teaching to gain an awareness of different programs and teaching styles. After graduating in 2007, I began working at Somerset Middle School in Modesto, CA as a Band and Orchestra teacher for 2 years. In 2008 I began teaching private lessons with the Suzuki Associaiton in Modesto, CA. I built and maintained a studio of around 10-14 students. In 2010, I received a position teaching orchestra to grades 6-12 with Modesto City Schools. In 2012, I decided to go back to pursue a masters degree in Violin Performance at Sacramento State University. I studied violin performance with Ian Swensen, Anna Presler, and Andy Luchansky. During this time, I also heavily involved myself in string pedagogy under the tutelage of Judy Bossuat-Weigert working with the String Project Foundation. In 2014 after graduating from the program, I worked at Foothill High School in Sacramento, CA as a Band, choir, and Orchestra Director. During this time, I revitalized their program and the Middle School feeder program. In addition to re-creating their orchestra program I was also able to add on a successful AP Music theory class. During this time, I also taught at Tim's Music Studio and maintained maintained a private studio of 15-20 students. In addition to teaching them privately, I also provided students with 2-3 performance opportunities per year. After teaching in Sacramento for 5 years, I moved to Illinois and accepted a position at Franklin Middle School in Wheaton, Illinois as the Orchestra Director. At every single school that I taught at I was able to successfully maintain and improve every program.

When I first meet a student, my main goal is that they begin to feel comfortable and open to asking me any questions that they might have. I love to start asking about things that they love to do (hobbies, extracurriculars) and what type of music they want to listen to. Finally, I just ask them to play something they love for me. This tells me a lot about how they play and what they might need help with in the future. This also allows them to perform something that they enjoy and are comfortable with for me.

I have worked with all types of students having experience in the public school system. All the classes I taught were inclusive to all students. I have taught special ed students and English Language Learners frequently in my programs. I have also taught students from various socioeconomic backgrounds through public school and the many educational programs I have taught with.

My advice to a student looking for a teacher is to make sure that you feel comfortable communicating with your teacher. You should be able to talk to them about the good and hard points of your playing. Your teacher should be flexible with working on what they know is important and what you love to do!!!

I was talking to my a former student from my first year of teaching and she mentioned how much she loved playing music in my class and how she will still pick up her instrument once in a while and go through the music that we played in class. My goal has never been to teach and create prodigies. It has only been to foster a life long love for music and to give my students the tools to properly lteach themselves how to practice and participate in musical groups and functions after they leave my programs and tutelage.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is important that students and parents think about what questions to ask their teachers before committing to lessons. The first question should ask about how the teacher plans to set their studnets up for success. They should be looking for any pedagogical methods a teacher uses and any supplements they use to strengthen their teaching. For example, I mainly teach the Suzuki method but I bring in a lot of other resources to ensure that we are still learning to note read and sight read together to prepare them for participation in youth symphonies and/or school orchestra programs. Another question they should ask should be about what their studio policy entails for missed lessons, the way the teacher's calendar is set up, fee policies, etc. It is important that the student, parents, and teacher are all on the same page about all of these issues. Students and parents should also ask about how many required performances and the expectation for each of these performances (do pieces need to be memorized or can they be performed with music, are they required or optional, is there an extra fee for performances). After these things are discussed, it is much easier to address students' learning needs..
