About Francis

I'm a native British English tutor with extensive one-to-one experience teaching students from primary level right through to A-Level. I specialise in the skills that actually move grades — close reading, analytical writing, essay structure, comprehension technique, and creative writing — and I tailor every session to your child's specific needs, exam board, and target school or grade.

11+ Preparation
The 11+ is high stakes and highly specific. I help students master the exact skills that selective schools and grammar schools test — comprehension, inference, vocabulary, and creative or continuous writing — so they walk into that exam room feeling genuinely prepared and confident, not overwhelmed.

GCSE English
Whether it's unpicking a poem for AQA Literature, writing a top-band Language analysis, or structuring a convincing argument, I know exactly what examiners reward and how to get your child consistently hitting those marks.

A-Level English
At A-Level the bar rises significantly. I help students develop the independent critical thinking, sophisticated analysis, and essay fluency that top universities expect — and that examiners at Edexcel, AQA, and OCR reward with the highest grades.

About the lesson

My Teaching Method

Every student learns differently, which is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Before we begin, I take time to understand exactly where your child is, what's holding them back, and what they need to achieve — then I build every lesson around that.

At the core of my teaching is critical thinking. Rather than simply drilling facts and formulas, I help students develop the ability to analyse, question, and apply knowledge independently — skills that don't just improve exam grades, but stay with them through university and into their careers.

My sessions typically include:

1) Concept breakdown — complex ideas explained clearly and simply, until
they genuinely click
2) Homework support — working through problems together so your child understands the process, not just the answer
3) Exam technique — learning how to approach questions strategically and communicate answers effectively
4) Regular progress checks — so we always know what's working and where to focus next

The goal isn't just to get through the syllabus. It's to build a student who feels genuinely confident in the subject — someone who can walk into an exam, or a university seminar, and hold their own.
