About Ilona

I graduated from Leeds University with a first class honours in Japanese in 2022.
As a learner of Japanese myself, I remember the intense struggle it was when I first started. I ended up developing creative ways to remember the endless new vocabulary and luckily passed my first year of study. Then I went on my year abroad. To my dismay, I found out that my Japanese sounded ‘textbook’ and unnatural, rather than like how Japanese people actually speak.
Years later, now living in Japan, I think about how much easier it would have been if I’d been aware of modern natural Japanese from the get go.

Although textbook Japanese is a good starting point, focusing solely on it results in beginners unable to communicate naturally. For this reason, I teach real, everyday spoken Japanese alongside its core concepts.
My lessons focus on building up your understanding of Japanese grammar, alongside developing your everyday vocabulary and pronunciation. If desired, I also allocate a section of the lesson to kanji, teaching you easy, imaginative ways for you to remember them!
I offer a free 20 minute consultation to establish your level and develop personalised lessons around your interests and goals.
