About Zach

I recently completed my M.A. in Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, supported by the Canada Graduate Scholarships–Master’s Award (a $17,500 research grant) for work on structuralist approaches to mathematical ontology. My academic background is strongest in formal logic, philosophy of mathematics, and metaphysics, and I also teach and mentor in ethics, epistemology, and political philosophy. I earned my B.A. in Honors Philosophy (High Distinction) from UBC in 2021 and received several academic awards, including the James Ruggles Macdonell Memorial Scholarship. During my undergraduate studies, I also spent a semester in India studying classical Indian logic and metaphysics. For the past seven years, I’ve taught debate and philosophy professionally, coaching students to major successes in debate, Ethics Bowl, and Ethics Olympiad across North America, China, and beyond. My students have published work in journals such as JSR and IJHSR, earned numerous shortlists at the John Locke Essay Competition, won two gold medals in the Harvard International Review essay contest, and won national level International Philosophy Olympiad Essay competitions. I’m also the co-founder of Modus Ponens Institute, a private education company focused on philosophy and debate. Outside of teaching, I’m usually skiing, mountaineering, or reading science fiction.

I have years of experience teaching formal logic to both high school and university students in classroom settings, as a teaching assistant, and in private 1-on-1 lessons. At the University of British Columbia, I completed every logic course available to me, including Intro to Symbolic Logic, Modal Logic, Non-Classical Logic, Metatheory and Computability, and Incompleteness and Gödel’s proofs. Along the way I earned High Distinction, the James Ruggles Macdonell Memorial Scholarship for excellence in philosophy, and a cumulative 95% average. I also spent much of my M.A. doing self-directed study in philosophy of mathematics, especially mathematical structuralism.

My approach is to make logic feel approachable and intuitive, both semantically and syntactically, while building reliable proof skills. I meet students where they are and focus on the fundamentals that drive performance: validity vs. soundness, formalization and symbolization, model-checking, and proof strategy. Depending on your course, we work in the proof system you need, including tableaux, natural deduction, sequent systems, and related methods.

A typical lesson starts with a quick diagnostic of what is currently hardest for you, then we do guided practice on a small set of representative problems. I show you a repeatable method, then you apply it with coaching until it becomes automatic. If you have assignments coming up, we can plan efficient problem-set workflows and exam prep, and I can also review solutions between sessions so you do not get stuck for long.

Lessons are ideal for high school students learning logic for the first time, undergraduates in formal logic and related philosophy or CS-adjacent courses, and anyone who wants to get confident with proofs and improve on problem sets, midterms, and final exams.
