About Katherine

About the lesson

I spent years reporting from overseas before moving into teaching, so my lessons are built around real news stories rather than invented textbook scenarios nobody actually encounters. Every lesson opens with a current event from across the French-speaking world, which we read, discuss, and pick apart together for both language and meaning. Vocabulary comes directly from real journalism, giving students genuinely useful words for talking about politics, economics, and daily life rather than artificial classroom topics. Grammar gets taught through the actual sentences we're reading, showing students exactly how professional writers construct clear, confident French in real published work. Discussion is central to every lesson, since forming and defending an opinion about a real story builds genuine, natural fluency far faster than scripted dialogue practice ever manages. I push students to summarize stories in their own words, a skill that builds both comprehension and genuine spoken confidence simultaneously in one exercise. Listening practice uses real broadcast clips from different regions, exposing students to natural pace and genuine accents rather than artificially slow textbook recordings. I keep students engaged with topics they actually care about, since forced, irrelevant material rarely produces lasting engagement in anyone I've taught.
