About Laura
I have a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and graduated first in my class at a college preparatory high school in Connecticut. I have also babysat for family members over the years and spent my summer after high school as a nanny for two elementary-age boys. My favorite parts of those experiences were helping with homework: reading practice, working through tricky math problems together, talking through concepts in science or history. I love learning, and I would love the opportunity to help impart that joy to other kids while making afternoons less stressful for kids and parents.
While I have a well-rounded educational background and knowledge base, my area of expertise is in writing and editing, so if reading, language arts, English literature, or writing (in any subject) is something your child needs particular help with, I hope you will reach out to me. I have experience, both in school and professionally, with writing, editing, and proofreading both academic and creative work.

In terms of homework help in general, my approach is based on the needs of the individual child. If they struggle to focus or are still learning good study habits, I can be more hands-on and directive to keep them on track, without stepping in to help the actual task itself until I’m needed. If they’re generally self-propelled, I will allow them their space until they reach a point of struggling and ask for assistance.
When I’m helping with a particular challenge, my approach is generally Socratic, asking them questions to help them find the answer themselves. If they’re still struggling with an overarching concept, we can review the material together to find where the breakdown in understanding began and build from there, again prompting and guiding with questions to ensure comprehension.
I take a similar approach to helping improve writing - asking why a change might be needed (based on grammar or style). I never want to rewrite something for someone else, so in the case of a change needed for style or clarity, I will help brainstorm and offer prompting questions to make sure they are communicating effectively, leaving the ultimate choice of wording up to them. I also offer tips and tools that I have found helpful over the years.
