About Isla

I am a current grade 12 student who will be attending the University of British Columbia in the fall for Arts, and eventually studying Social Work. I used to struggle a lot in school, but in the past few years, I have worked on rewiring my thinking and pushing myself to work harder, and I am proud to say I am averaging a 95 in my grade 12 classes. I am someone who has always had a passion for community and people, and have volunteered as an assistant Art Teacher for elementary school students and run a peer tutoring club at my school where I taught students English, French, Art and Biology.

I find that when students learn from someone they can see eye to eye with, they are able to be comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, unlocking a deeper understanding of their topic. This is important, as a big fear among students and academic insecurity is being looked down on or chastised for their mistakes. I believe in creating an environment for all students that is open and comfortable, allowing them to break through the mental barriers that are stopping them and flourish in their chosen topic.

About the lesson

I myself am a student, so I understand the stress of a difficult class that continues to progress, while it feels like you were struggling units ago. Growing up in a partially French household and attending French Immersion, I learned that the best way to pick up the language and feel confident in all aspects is to set a goal and complete steps, whether big or small, consistently over time. My way of teaching focuses less on the mistakes and more on how we can reroute them to become a lesson. It's important to me that all students, no matter the age, can build a foundation in the language and not be afraid to mess up and learn from it.

A lesson for an elementary student would focus less on a grade or goal, but rather on ingraining the key parts of the French language and supporting them through their classwork, depending on what grade they are in.

A lesson for a high school student might start with an idea for a grade they are aiming for, while considering their current standing. The lessons would focus on their current unit or past units, where I would aid by stepping in and guiding them through the basics, as we build onto more complex topics.

Every student's way of learning will be different, therefore each approach will be geared specifically to that student.
