About Kerri

I am a French Immersion teacher in Kelowna, BC. I currently teach grade 6 and have experience teaching grades 1 through 6. I began my teaching career in Ontario before moving to Kelowna in 2015. This is my 8th year teaching and I currently tutor two students, one in grade 4 and one in grade 6.

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Arts - French major -- Wilfrid Laurier University, 2012
Bachelor of Education - Primary/Junior -- Wilfrid Laurier University, 2013
Maîtrise en Éducation - Enseigner et apprendre en français en contextes de diversité -- Simon Fraser University, 2019

About the lesson

I specialize in grade 1-6 French Immersion, where I love to tailor lessons to students' interests, abilities, and how best they learn. Games are one of my favourite tools for getting students excited about learning and keeping them highly engaged!

To start, I like to get to know the student, form a connection, and assess their unique learning needs. This helps me design lessons that will be effective, engaging and fun for your child. These lessons are usually one hour and look something like this:
1) Warm-up (French conversation and/or a game)
2) Lesson (ex. a new reading strategy, a grammar point, writing practice)
3) Guided practice
4) Game

In consultation with you and your child, extra practice/homework may also be assigned to help your child keep up their skills until the next lesson.

I encourage students to speak only in French with me to build their confidence, vocabulary and overall oral communication.

Our first meeting (15-30 minutes) is free over Zoom. This is not so much a lesson, but a chance for us to meet and for me to gauge your child's needs and abilities. It's important that a tutor is a good fit for the learner and someone that they can connect with! There is absolutely no pressure to select me as your child's tutor after this meeting.
