About the lesson
I first identify the needs of each student by assessing their strengths and weaknesses, then building a focused program that will place a strong focus on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation as well as reading and listening comprehension, and written and oral expression. Developing an understanding of Francophone culture and relevant geography is also an important element of being able to communicate effectively with Francophones around the world. We will use materials that will expose the student to these cultural realities.

I have studied French extensively, from elementary school through to the University of Toronto and various professional work placements in the Francophone-speaking world. I have lived, worked, and studied in France, Quebec, and Francophone Africa.
I have taught languages including French, as well as other subjects to students of all ages for over 10 years. I have also taught in French while working abroad.

Perfect! Ms. Shiren is a knowledgeable, experienced and patient tutor. She responds to messages promptly and she is quite professional. She made my daughter comfortable within minutes of the first teaching and she was able to identify her strengths and areas of deficiencies. Perfect! Ms. Shiren is really good in teaching. She prepared useful French materials with exercise to practice with me. It’s really organized and she knows what she is doing. My level is not beginner but also not advanced, pretty weak in speaking, good at passing exams. Teacher designed the lessons suitable for my level, I like it!

My friendship with Shiren developed an admiration. Shiren is more than a tutor. She is an ally who will support you and accompany you throughout the entire curriculum. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I started studying French, as the second official language of Canada, at the age of six. I started officially learning Spanish and Chinese at the ages of 14 and 15 respectively, and have always had a love of languages, communications, and writing, and sought out language study and enhancement whenever I could.

What makes you passionate about your subject?
It seems to be an innate desire I have to understand communication and culture, and how they reflect and impact each other. I like to observe how different languages express different cultural values, and often, how they reflect very similar cultural values but in different ways.

What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
I enjoy seeing students I tutor go from little understanding of, or a lot of confusion about, a subject to a state of self-confidence with the language; a greater desire to grow and improve; and a sense of pride and success in their own work in the subject they sought tutoring for.

Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
My university-level Spanish literature teacher and my high school teacher of both French and Spanish inspired me with their unique approaches to teaching and their visible passion for the languages they taught. Their own passion was very evident in the creativity they presented in the activities selected for the class. They would often go to great lengths to ensure the material was engaging to us as a class, and that we as students were inspired as well.

What are your keys to success?
My keys to success are to find your passion and commit to it for the long term. Don't do it for results; but when you see the results you gain as a result of your investment, you will be pleased and proud of your own growth.
