About Abby

I get myself over to France at every available opportunity, immerssion in French culture is incredibly useful when trying to get a handle on the language. Alongside my studies, the time I have spent staying with French families and working in a nursery school in Paris has given me a deep understanding of both literary and colloquial French.

This is my first endeavour into formal tutoring, although I did tutor my sister in French throughout her GCSE studies where she received a 9. I also spent some time with my local football academy teaching English to young French nationals.

Whilst I have never taught in a professional capacity, my recent experience as a student means I have first-hand experience of the current system and examination process.

I completed my A levels last year and am currently in my first year of undergraduate study. Having sat my French A level in 2019, I am very familiar with what is required and the format of the exams. Furthermore, I have recently gone through the Oxford application process and would be more than happy to help anyone looking to apply to Oxford or Cambridge with advice from my own experience.

About the lesson

I am a student at the University of Oxford, studying Philosophy and French. I have a huge passion for French and would be delighted to pass this on to anyone I can!

When I started learning French it was just another subject that I was obliged to study. I felt, as many do, that the only people who end up really comfortable with a second language are those who are raised bilingual, or have at least some family connection to the language or country in question. I had no connection to France or French whatsoever.

As soon as I started to realise that my understanding of the language wasn't as bad as I had been telling myself, it opened me up to far more than I ever thought learning French in an academic setting could offer. Once you realise that French has more to teach you than the ability to describe what is in your pencil case to someone who lives across the Channel, it becomes a far more enjoyable and rewarding experience.

My teaching style will be different depending on the ability of each student but I will place a focus on accessing the French language in an enjoyable way, that doesn't necessarily feel like studying. By this I mean introducing you to aspects of French culture which you can choose to enjoy in your own time. A lot of the examinations expect an understanding of French and francophone culture and
current affairs and I would like to introduce students to ways of accessing this knowledge in an enjoyable way.

I will focus on exposure to French music, TV, film, literature and social media, with the aim to place the French language in the context of young people. This will help to integrate the French language into everyday life in an almost effortless way.

Depending on the level of French I am also happy to conduct tutorials exclusively in French. I think it is important to get comfortable speaking the language as nerves are often our worst enemy when it comes to oral assessments.
