About Rhys

Academic:

I hold a Masters in Pure Mathematics from Glasgow University, and I am currently completing my PhD in Mathematics at Liverpool University.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for seven years and have been part of the Liverpool outreach team for four years. During this time, I have worked alongside long term teachers, and have learnt from their pedagogical techniques. I am currently a math tutor at Education Place in Liverpool, where I teach groups of three students GCSE maths.

More about me:

I am currently transitioning from academia to industry, specifically data science, and I am tutoring to pay the rent in the meantime. Also, I have a cocker spaniel called Maisy, she's the best pup.

About the lesson

First (free) lesson:

I start by getting to know the student and I will assess where the student is at and find any gaps. This will involve asking a few questions and possibly setting a small assessment. I also ask students to send me any recent results/papers. We will then organize a revision plan for the coming weeks.

Typical lesson:

I will start with any issues encountered from the previous lesson or a starter activity.

I will mostly focus on past paper questions to work on solving problems, understanding exam language and exam technique. If we encounter a troublsome concept I will explain it with examples then quiz to ensure it is understood.

We will also build a mind map of the learning objectives and track known and difficult areas, targeting difficult areas.

At the end of the lesson, we reflect on what we covered and set homework to solidify learning. Which will focus on core areas to built foundations as they will help tackle the harder problems.

Approach:

We then work through questions with an open mind and investigate problems together to piece together an argument for an answer, and hope to develop:

- toolbox of skills to tackle questions,
- the probing questions to progress through tasks,
- a open mind to explore and adapt to the information presented,
- the patience to tackle one problem at a time,
- and the discipline and consistency to keep on track.

Throughout I encourage and give guidance to inspire inspire curiosity, a genuine interest in maths and the confidence to succeed.
I am skilled at managing stressors related to the learning process, especially with exams, and I am compassionate about my students' well-being.

Admin & Feedback:

I tutor GCSE, A Level lessons and entrance examination syllabus of the school they are applying for.

I can provide feedback of the students progrees to the parents at an agreed apon frequency.

I can also mark past papers, if they are set for homework.

Lessons are conducted online using Zoom (I may explore Bitpaper or Onenote).

I am available by email if you have any concerns.
