About Keiko

Originally from Nagoya, Japan, I've been living in the UK for many years. My background is in Applied Linguistics and language education, and I'm a qualified language teacher of Japanese and English.

I have over 13 years of professional experience teaching Japanese in the UK, mainly in higher education. I've taught at UK universities and online language training service providers across all levels — from complete beginners to advanced degree students — and have also worked with adult learners and corporate clients.

I've taught students with many different goals: travel, exams, university study, and personal interest. I teach with patience and genuine empathy, and my aim is always to build your confidence alongside your skills.

For many years, I also worked at a research institute specialising in Japanese arts and culture, where I organised public events and outreach activities. Through this work, I developed a deep interest in sharing Japanese culture with people from different backgrounds, something I enjoy bringing into my lessons as well.

I'm currently learning Mandarin Chinese myself, so I truly understand the challenges and rewards of language learning — and I bring that empathy into every lesson. I'd love to support you on your Japanese learning journey!

About the lesson

My lessons are always student-centred and tailored to your goals, pace, and learning style. I specialise in beginner Japanese, helping students build a strong foundation while gradually developing confidence in conversational Japanese for everyday situations. I also have extensive experience teaching intermediate and advanced learners, including many years teaching Japanese at university level in the UK.

One of my priorities is to make Japanese grammar clear and manageable without feeling overwhelming. I guide students step by step, explaining not only how the language works but also the subtle nuances that help you sound more natural. I also enjoy introducing elements of Japanese culture in my lessons, as language and culture naturally go hand in hand.

Lessons are structured yet relaxed, creating a supportive environment where you can practise comfortably and make steady progress.
