About Sam

Hello there! My name is Sam, and I’m a full-time private tutor with seven years of experience. I’m currently doing a mix of in-person and online tutoring, whichever would suit you best. After spending some time as a climbing and piano instructor, I completed a master’s degree in maths at Leeds University and have been teaching maths ever since. I specialise in GCSE, A-level, undergraduate and graduate level maths and really enjoy the variety of helping out students with different levels of abilities and backgrounds.

I always try to make my lessons a friendly, comfortable environment and to tailor each lesson to the students needs. If they are the sort who struggles with maths for any number of reasons, I make sure to encourage them and to go at their pace. If, on the other hand, they very much excel in maths and are gunning for top grades, I will challenge them appropriately and explain the theory in much more nuance in order to equip them with the independent thought needed for higher levels of problem solving. On top of this, I think it’s important to keep in mind the wants of the parents: whether they have high expectations for their child, or just want to make sure they stay on top of the course over the year.

If you or your child is a university student, or you are a mature student looking for higher level education, please do let me know the specific topics you would like help with, as unfortunately the world of maths is far too vast for any one tutor to specialise in it all, although I can help in a wide variety of topics.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I can’t guarantee I can help with all the topics at the graduate level, but to give you some idea of my teaching experience so far: I have tutored modules on group theory, differential equations, real analysis, linear algebra, Fourier analysis, ring theory, mathematical techniques in microeconomics, differential geometry, linear programming, coding theory, commutative algebra, homological algebra, category theory, first order and propositional logic, number theory, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some! The purer the topic, the more likely it is that I can help at a higher level. There are other topics I am able to teach but haven’t yet been asked, so please do get in touch if you think I might be able to help. I should also let you know that it might have been a while since I last taught a given subject so I might need a bit of time to refresh myself on the course. Access to lecture notes and worksheets is almost always a must, as every course, even if on the same topic, is wildly different in which theorems are taught and which type of problems they expect you to solve.
