About Nicolas

Hey, I’m Nicolas, and I’ve spent the last 20 years studying in Singapore. As a student, I often heard teachers say, "Understand, don’t memorise," but I didn’t grasp what true understanding meant. I could recite Newton’s third law, yet still struggled with applying it to real problems. Everything changed when my Chemistry teacher introduced me to the concept of "first principles"—starting with the core foundations of a topic before tackling more complex ideas. This approach transformed my learning and led me to excel in Math and Science, earning a spot in my college’s honour roll five consecutive times and ranking among the top scorers in Chemistry.

Now, I’m here to share this proven, timeless and versatile technique with you. By focusing on first principles, you’ll not only see a significant improvement in your grades but also relieve the stress of rote memorisation. Let’s work together to unlock your full potential.

About the lesson

Why hire a recently graduated and young student with no formal teaching qualifications? I admit, most older and more experienced tutors out there may have more technical knowledge in the subject than me. However, unless you are writing your PhD dissertation, hiring a recent graduate suits your needs as a student better because

(a) Knowledge, whilst important, is not everything. Identifying common question types and the answering techniques that examiners look out for is also important in separating an 'A' student from a 'B' student.

(b) I can help you cut through the extraneous fluff and zoom in on specific question types that are commonly tested.

(c) My rates are much more reasonable :)

For the past year, I volunteered as a tutor for lower secondary school students. I get it, exams are tough. You need a mentor who supports you in your learning, instead of pushing for rote memorisation. My approach focuses on teaching first principles, helping you build a strong foundation to confidently tackle more complex problems and apply concepts across different types of questions.

Online lessons will be conducted via Zoom for 1.5 hours for upper-secondary to JC2 students taking E/A math or pure/combined chemistry.

I took my A levels in 2022 and I scored A's for all my H2 subjects and a distinction in H3 Chemistry. I'll be enrolling into a local medical school next year.
