About Oscar

I am a maths tutor with 6+ years of experience teaching a range of ages and abilities. This includes 2+ years of total school-based maths teaching experience across both primary and secondary schools.

Academic Background & Qualifications:

BSc Mathematics (Part-Time): Starting with the Open University this October.
School & Exam Results: Grade 9 in GCSE Maths, A in AS Maths/Further Maths, and a First Class degree (University of Sheffield).
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (University of Sussex): Completed a 20-week, full-time mathematics course covering content and teaching methods from KS3–KS5.
Mathematics PGCE (First Stage): Undertook secondary teacher training, gaining classroom experience and strong grounding in pedagogical theory.

Additional Teaching Experience

CELTA Qualification: Certified in English language teaching, providing formal training in clear communication and structuring explanations.
Chess Coach: Experience in teaching and training chess, focusing on developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

My Approach
I design my lessons to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and foster connections. Rather than memorising isolated facts, I believe it is far more useful (and more interesting!) for students to explore patterns, ask questions, and reason. Not only does this embed mathematical understanding, it provides students with essential problem-solving skills.

Visual & Practical: I extensively use visual representations to help make ideas intuitive. I also connect mathematics to real life, other subjects, and practical scenarios where possible.

Long-Term Retention: Using mastery and repetition methods, I aim to ensure students retain information in their long-term memory.

Exam Preparation: For GCSE and A-Level students, we pair this conceptual understanding with targeted exam board practice, breaking down past papers and perfecting exam technique.
