About Talia

Hi! My name is Talia Mintz and I am a 12th grade French Immersion Honor roll student. In my free time, I enjoy reading and writing, as well as running my school's Model United Nations Club. I spend my summers and holidays working as a barista and cooking at my lake and flying out to visit my younger cousins in Victoria whenever I can! I've had my babysitter license since the 6th grade and have been nannying for the past 3 years. I've gained leadership experience through programs like the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Parlement Jeunesse Franco-Manitobain. This past year I had the opportunity to participate as a member of the MUNA 2023 Organizing committee as well as the Secretary-General. I was also able to travel to Ottawa to participate in the CJPAC generations program. In school, I particularly enjoy my science and language courses, but am also a bit of a history nerd and always enjoy helping students with geography or social studies classes!

About the lesson

When working with students I have three main techniques I find to be most successful. The first is tutee summaries, where I work with the student to create overviews of the concepts they're struggling with. I find that being able to reference these when they're studying on their own helps their comprehension in the long term. Secondly, I understand that the student feeling comfortable is just as important as any other study technique and make sure to create a fun and stress-free space, as well as using positive reinforcement! Lastly, I like to make sure the students are getting hands-on experience with the material and try to make sure they're engaged by asking open-ended and probing questions, having students explain concepts after we've reviewed them out loud as well as rewording difficult questions we might be stuck on. As a tutor, I feel that I'm able to approach these situations with the type of patience and respect I feel is necessary. In primary school, I remember feeling as though there was a lot of shame and stress associated with needing extra time or support. I want to make sure all my students understand that there is nothing wrong with asking for help, and that being willing to put in the extra effort is a much stronger sign of a good student than an A+ is. My lessons are for anyone in grades 1-10. I have been in the immersion program for 11 years and am accepting both French Immersion and non-French Immersion students. I have experience working with younger kids through babysitting and nannying jobs throughout the past 4 years.
