About Alistair

I have a 1st in BSc(hons) Evolutionary Biology from a Russel Group university. I've worked in a lab and have a published article in an academic journal.

I currently tutor GCSE students via their school, helping those left behind by lockdown to catch up on their learning. I have also taught lessons in a secondary school and worked with teenagers in a youth-worker role with a specific focus on ecology and environmental science.

I have a lot of practical experience and can advise on statistics and scientific writing, experimental design if students have upcoming practical lab exams.

About the lesson

I have experience working with a wide range of ability levels, and am happy to adapt to the needs of a student.
If possible, please tell me which exam boards and syllabus/textbooks a student is using. I will familiarize myself with their specific course where relevant, and cover all essential material, as well as allowing interested students to explore topics they find exciting in greater depth. Science is fascinating, so no student should be left bored witless in a lesson!
I will plan and structure sessions in a clear and logical way, and offer homework, or assistance with work assigned by a school, if needed.
Where a student finds a subject challenging, I will look at a variety of approaches until they feel confident that they understand the material.
I am happy to help with exam preparation, understanding how exams are marked and what a student needs to do to pass well.

Working online will be via video or voice chat, with screen sharing and presentations or learning aids where appropriate. Parents are welcome to sit in on sessions. I am happy to talk to the student or student's parent for free before starting tutoring to go through what topics a student has learned already, which are troubling, and where my help can be more useful. I will also recommend relevant educational videos for students to watch outside of sessions if I find any that are helpful.
