About Jonny

I am a specialist in the subjects of Film and Media; I studied Film & Video at the University of South Wales (the campus where they filmed Netflix hit 'Sex Education'!) receiving a 2.1 overall and a 1st for my dissertation on the changing representation of World War II on film from 1939-present day.

After a 10 year stint in conference production I returned to the world of film & media as a teacher earning a distinction in my PGCE and winning both Oxford Brookes University's Secondary Trainee Teacher of the Year (2022) and a Bronze Award at the National Teaching Awards (2024) for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year. I've taught both Film and Media Studies at GCSE and A-level as well as running a film-making club for younger years and organising a 'House Film' competition to encourage students to develop their practical skills and portfolios for university admissions.

I am currently undertaking a Masters in Film Practice at Arts University Bournemouth which allows me to be fairly flexible with my availability.

I have a strong understanding of both film/media theory and practical production so can support with deepening understanding of subject content, writing structure for essays/exam answers, revision and tips for developing great NEA/production work.

Sessions can be either one hour or two. For 14-18 students sessions are focused on a mix of revising key topics to develop your depth of knowledge and writing skills to get you exam-ready. I have taught both GCSE and A-level Film Studies and likewise both GCSE and A-level Media Studies. I have experience with both AQA, Eduqas and OCR specifications but can easily adapt tutoring to Cambridge International content. I can also advise on NEA development.

I am also able to support undergraduate film students with essay structure, deciphering key academic concepts/theories and offer tips on production work too.

You'll find all sessions have a friendly, relaxed vibe tailored to where you're at in your learning and whatever you need to help you progress.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I study Film Studies at A-level and progressed to studying Film & Video at university, I’ve always been passionate about film and the wider media and at university I re-started the student newspaper, helped launch a student magazine, launched an online student TV channel and had a show on the student radio! I passed my PGCE in Media Studies top of my year group and I’ve taught Media, Film and Drama as well as some Key Stage 3 English.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love teaching Film and/or Media Studies. In Media I most enjoy teaching newspapers, TV and advertising, in Film I most enjoy the experimental film section and supporting students to complete their NEA.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Film Studies teacher at A-level was transformational for me, she inspired me to take my love of film to a new level.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Understanding each student is different and will benefit from different ways of explaining things or practising.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My profile picture is me holding a genuine Best Picture Oscar, sadly it’s not mine but was taken at a Screen Skills Berkshire event at Shinfield Studios in Reading where I met the producer of ‘The King’s Speech’.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I think in Media Studies getting your head around the theorists is difficult at first but once you realise it’s mostly common sense arguments in fancy words it becomes easier!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My biggest passion is for watching and making films, I like discovering old classics as well as going to the cinema to see the latest releases. I’m studying a Masters degree in Film Practice at Arts University Bournemouth at the moment. I love seeing student’s films or music videos for their NEA and at my last school I organised a student filmmaking competition where the winners got their films screened at the local cinema.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I won a Bronze award at the National Teaching Awards for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year in 2024, I think that’s largely down to my passion for helping students realise their potential in Media and/or Film.
