About Toby
I hold an MS in Evolutionary Biology from San Diego State University (2025) and have a strong academic and professional background in the biological sciences. From 2019 to 2022, I worked at the Natural History Museum of Utah, where I developed a deep commitment to education through public outreach and science communication. My academic training centers on evolutionary biology, biogeography, systematics, and organismal biology, with particular expertise in arthropods, especially arachnids. I am passionate about helping students understand both foundational biological concepts and the diversity of life that is often overlooked. As a tutor, I strive to make complex scientific ideas accessible, engaging, and relevant, while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and confidence in the biological sciences.

I have extensive knowledge and experience teaching undergraduate students in science.
My methods rely on constant assessment of a student's understanding, to inform which techniques work, and how I can better communicate difficult concepts. For student focused tutoring, I use a combination of hands on inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and problem-solving that is implemented in a systematic and cohesive way.
Most of my experience pertains to teaching undergraduate students in different fields of Biology, but I am also skilled with public outreach and educating younger or less familiar audiences. This is especially true with regard to organismal biology and fine art techniques.
