About Mary
I became a teacher long after I graduated from The University of Texas in Austin. My first love was cooking, and I'm a trained personal chef. I was lucky enough to have dinner, along with 6 others, with Julia Child. Google it.
I have really loved every year I was a teacher, no matter the age - and that includes my 10 years of private tutoring. These experiences all happened in Houston before and after my daughter was born. I mostly taught Preschool ages for the first 11 years, and when my daughter was older, I tutored middle schoolers in the summer and after school.
Middle school is a good time to establish habits of anything related to school, and I taught a course called "Essential Study Skills" whereby my students could keep the workbook. It didn't appeal to those girls in the summer, however I heard later it offered lots of help during finals.

I believe for our first lesson, we should spend a little time talking about ourselves...after all, we're going to be trusting one another for a little while.
*If Reading Comprehension is one of our first tasks, we'll begin by reading out loud. This works magic.*
*I would like to give you a "re-test" of words and their spelling to see where you are, and a brief vocab test. If you don't know what you're reading, you can't grab on and find it interesting.
*What are some of your favorite books? Why?
*I want to see where you are with your spelling, grammar and punctuation; the best way is to have you fill in some blanks and correct the passages where you think there are errors.
*I'm here to help with the basics as you learn very quickly how easy it is to master reading and how spelling, grammar, and punctuation fall in line.
