As a graduate who majored in philosophy with a minor in mathematics, I've found great pleasure in tutoring in algebra and geometry for nearly ten years. Working from home, I'm ready to offer lessons

About Charlotte
For many students in middle school, mathematics seems to transform from a simple, useful tool into a needlessly convoluted joke. The word problems seem to mock them, and the lettered ciphers in equations go against the grain. However, there is no need for mathematics to be scary or obscure at this level. I am passionate about helping my students to both learn and like mathematics throughout all their time studying.

-While I keep in mind that different needs and personalities require different approaches, I generally follow a policy called ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) for each element taught. Engaging the student first with either a riddle, a real-world wonder based on what he/she is studying, then introducing the principle, and last, giving him/her a chance to use what has been learned.
- A typical, hour-long lesson plan would look like this:
*5 minutes - Introduction and discussion of goals for that lesson
*10 minutes - Fun examples of how these principles will benefit the student in real life.
*10 minutes - Puzzle. This could be a riddle, an original Greek/Arabic/Cretian, etc. proposition to play with, or other activity that would lead the student to think outside the box and try to discover the principle for himself/herself.
*5 minutes - Explanation of the principle/theorem, etc. that is the object of the lesson.
*10 minutes - Exercises. How the interaction proceeds depends on the personality and needs of the student. More or less time will be spent here accordingly.
*10 minutes - Historical explanation of the discipline's origins, and how it helped then and can help now.
*10 minutes - Discussion of difficulties in the lesson, gauging student's satisfaction and progress. Assignment of homework if requested by parent/guardian.
- Mathematics, being such a pure, abstract discipline, often appeals immediately to some people, and to others, not at all. I find that my training in the history of mathematics helps me to contextualize it and give it a color more appealing to a broader range of students.
- I am happy to help any middle school student, from grades 6-9, with any of the following: Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, or Geometry.
