I have just graduated from Durham University with a BSc in Chemistry attaining a high 2:1 overall (June 2017). At school, I achieved A*s in all 11 of my GCSEs across a range of subjects, whilst also taking additional maths (free standing maths qualification, FSMQ). Instead of A levels, I chose to do IB as I was quite well rounded academically. However, my subjects were more focused on the sciences doing HL Chemistry (7), HL Maths (6), HL Physics (7), SL Economics (7), SL English (6) and SL French (6), achieving an overall mark of 41.
I have always been quite driven and a hard worker, but found that the best way for me to learn was actually through explaining it to someone else, and realised that I actually really enjoyed it too! I began tutoring in my sixth form, where I taught science struggling GCSE students every Friday afternoon. This was in preparation for a month-long visit to a school in Fiwilia, Zambia where I taught maths and science to classes of up to 100 people at a time. This helped me to really get to grips on how to simplify concepts down, especially as many of the students had very basic English. I also helped to tutor students who came with homework and problems in the evening one-on-one. I also have a lot of experience in teaching sports as well as academia, including hockey to lower age groups as an assistant coach and sailing, kayaking and canoeing when I was a camp councillor at an American summer camp.
I am an approachable, chatty and friendly person, and take pride that I am often the person friends go to when they have a chemistry question. I am happy to teach all levels of chemistry as well as maths and physics to GCSE, but can help with higher levels as well!
