About Rhiannon

Hello, I'm Rhiannon and I recently completed my PhD in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. I also have a First Class MMath degree from the University of Oxford. I am now working as a research fellow in Mathematics at UCL. Prior to my PhD, I worked as a full time Mathematics teacher at Giggleswick School, a leading independent boarding school in North Yorkshire. Here, I taught at a variety of levels from Year 7 up to Year 13, including Further Maths A Level and GCSE.

During my time at Oxford I was a college tutor at Balliol, Jesus, and Somerville College, teaching first and second year Pure Mathematics courses. I also conducted interviews for Mathematics and joint school subjects at Oriel, Balliol, and Jesus College. This means that I am very familiar with the admissions process. I previously worked for the AMSP as a MAT mentor, and I have experience tutoring students online and at Giggleswick School for the MAT and other Mathematics admissions tests.

For three years, I was president of the society for postgraduate minorities in Mathematics at Oxford. This means that I am very aware and equipped to handle issues that arise from being a minority (e.g a woman in Maths). I also have experience teaching students whose first language isn't English. In 2018, I taught English in China for a few months and in 2019 I taught Mathematics at a respected international summer school based at Eton College.

About the lesson

I am a friendly and approachable tutor and I am passionate about sharing my love for Maths. From my own experience, Maths is a subject which requires hard work to understand and appreciate so I really focus on building resilience and self-confidence in my students. Developing transferable skills, such as problem solving skills, is also key to my approach. The students should see that as their Mathematics ability improves, so does their performance in their other subjects.

When teaching a concept I will give a brief review of the topic, giving some of the reasoning behind it or linking it to concepts that the student has already learnt. I will ask the student questions and give them problems throughout to check their understanding, increasing in difficulty as necessary.

In our session today we did a Maths mock interview. I was really impressed with how Lara reasoned through the questions, she showed great subject knowledge and was able to apply her knowledge in unusual ways. We will do more practise on number theory questions in future sessions. Next session Lara will present her solution to a curve sketching question I will send her, and we will discuss some further curve sketching questions.
