About Beth
I take piano seriously, but I have also experienced how fun and playful and beautiful it is, which means that at the end of the day I hope learning with me helps you become a disciplined, skilled, but also eager piano player who enjoys playing the instrument. It is hard work, and takes commitment (especially at first), but it is very worth it, even if you decide not to keep up with it longterm. I am also an older sister (I have three younger siblings) who likes to laugh, which means I'm used to balancing an orderly, by-the-book attitude with an attitude that also makes things cheerful and chill, and I hope that shows if we take lessons together. I looked forward to playing piano with you.

I was taught to play the piano through a classical method, from which I've taken different pros and cons. As someone who once took lessons, I think that every piano player should:
- spend more time on the keys than they do in a theory book (though theory has its place)
- be able to sight read well
- know the flats and sharps of every key (by knowing the respective scales)
- dabble thoroughly (at least in the beginning) in the different styles (including classical and jazz) for two purposes:
a) to be well-versed
b) to find what they love
- have a passion project that they are committed to learning, regardless of its level of difficulty
- know the rules well enough to bend them (improvising is fun!)
My level of experience and teaching style are primarily geared towards people who are just starting out at the beginner level, and I will work with anyone at this level regardless of how old they are!
My lessons are shaped according to the list above, and will include an opening exercise of scale practice, we will go over any theory related work (which will depend on how much theory work the individual needs), practice a song that has been picked from one of the mainstream genres to learn, and end with either practicing a song the individual has chosen for themselves or with some improvising to end the lesson on a more playful, loosened up note.
