I first study the student's curriculum and by experience sort out the most important concepts. Then I try my best to make that concept easy for the student to understand, and find other alternative easier methods to solve the same problem without consuming much time. Then comes application, students need to relate to whatever they learn, only then would they gain actual knowledge.
