About Mia

Hi! I'm Mia Helfrich, English Literature student at McGill University. I have taken three years of Creative Writing classes and am going on three years as a student journalist. I currently write for the McGill Tribune. My dream is to be a literary agent to help writers like yourselves.

I've taken the SAT, AP Language, and AP Literature tests, so I can share the techniques that I've found the most effective. With my knowledge in Dutch, French, and Latin, and proficiency in basic linguistics concepts, such as IPA, we can help break down words as we read to build our reading skills.

I LOVE to read and talk about all genres of writing. Besides literature, I like to garden, watch films, and draw.

About the lesson

I want to get to know you! The more we can connect with each other, the more we'll be able to learn together.

Business in the front - party in the back. The beginning of the lesson will be focused, then we'll do something fun at the end. First, you'll let me know what you would like to improve on and if you've been struggling with anything in class/on tests. Then we'll do a quick warm-up, usually a 5 minute writing/oral prompt.

For younger kids: We'll read an awesome story and ask questions about the story. You may write their thoughts as well. Then we'll play a game incorporating elements from the story. It's about keeping up the good energy and building your confidence in reading comprehension and writing.

For teens: We'll read a text and discuss the themes, characters, styles, etc. I want to hear your opinion! For the lessons we may do debates, Kahoots, roleplays, or anything else to keep the ball rolling. We will also build arguments, analysis, and thesis statements that will help you in your English classes. After the lesson we'll play a game with the themes from the texts. I want to build your skills and confidence in writing.

For Test Prep: This will be 100% tailored to the type of test! We'll work together on so many practice questions, you'll feel so ready for your exam. If we find a skill you are struggling in, we'll go through questions that require that skill. I'll help you break down each question and help you find patterns throughout the exam questions. We'll build the test-taking strategies that work for you. We will also practice timed questions as needed. After the lesson, we'll do a game to relax the nerves. You got this!
