About Sam
My lessons are tailored to the student, using an approach that centres your goals and builds upon whatever musical experience you have. I like to focus on gaining the fundamental skills through exploring repertoire, exercises and just having fun with the instrument. Technique and musical knowledge are incredibly important but are often taught in such a dry clinical way that they are quickly forgotten, I prefer to make all musical education immediately practical so even the least enjoyable element of learning becomes exciting and pleasurable. With my years of experience as a teacher working in such varied environments as schools, special schools and even prisons I have taught people from all backgrounds and ages, but through all of my experience I have found that enthusiasm and patience are the two most important skills as a teacher, I'd like to think this is evidenced by my history of students consistently reaching their goals, many of whom are now working musicians. As a performer I've performed at festivals and stages around the country and Europe, winning such awards with bands as "the parliamentary jazz award and the European Jazz award". Despite training in Jazz, composition and Indian classical music I have experience performing and teaching most styles, from metal to folk to mariachi. Any type of music that interests you to learn interests me to teach. I can accommodate most needs when it comes to teaching, as in the past I have taught mobility and learning impaired students, including those whose mobility issues would typically mean they couldn't access the bass.

I'm a Leeds-based bass player who has taught bass to students of all ages and backgrounds, with more than 10 years of experience I have developed an approach that is relaxed but gives my students the results they want to become the musicians they would love to be. As a performer playing around the country and Europe (recently winning the parliamentary Jazz award with "Ubunye") I also have the practical skills and experience to support musicians who are currently working and performing. My experience of styles varies from jazz, country, mariachi, rock, metal, solo bass performance and pretty much anything you can think of. Variety is the spice of life after all! If you are looking for high quality lessons with an enthusiastic and experienced tutor look no further!

Sam has been teaching my son Archie bass guitar for a few years now, from about grade 4 onwards.
Sam’s an excellant teacher - he and Archie have a great rapport, and Archie’s made good progress. Most importantly, Archie enjoys playing bass, and enjoys his lessons with Sam. Sam plays bass professionally with several bands and his experience of the music industry is useful and inspiring for students. I’d thoroughly recommend Sam as a teacher to other bass students.
Laura MCLELLAN, RoundhaySam is a great tutor. He helps me develop by playing different styles, using his knowledge and experience to encourage me out of my comfort zone and master new techniques. All done in a planned, friendly, supportive and non-pressurised way which motivates me to practice and learn.
I highly recommend guitar lessons with Sam. I’ve been having lessons once a week since May 2024. Sam is an excellent tutor. His lessons are enjoyable and relaxed but with a clear focus. Sam is a talented musician and incredibly knowledgeable about different genres of music and all things guitar related. I recommend Sam for beginners to advanced musicians. I’ve made great progress and plan to have lessons with Sam for as long as possible!
Sam has been teaching bass guitar to our now teenage daughter for more than two years: he's extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, patient and encouraging, and as a guitar player myself I'm really impressed by the results he's achieved through a great balance of fun exercises, musical theory and a love of the instrument. He is engaging and personable, and has tailored his lessons to include the sort of music that our daughter likes, meaning she looks forward to the lessons and can practise the songs from her favourite artists. His communication about lessons is also great - he's reliable and on time too.
Sam is patient, creative and been a fantastic tutor to my 13-year-old son. The content of the sessions are varied, fun and includes music we all enjoy to listen too when my son is practising. My son has learnt a lot of new skills in understanding music that has also supported him at school.
Sam has been teaching my children for over 8 years now - both bass and guitar - and they have made significant progress and a real love of playing their instruments. They have progressed through the grades well when they have wanted to do that, but also really enjoy the focus on non grade work, with lots of improvisation, great technique and they find it inspiring to be taught by a musician who has a broad musical career outside of teaching. Would highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for guitar or bass tuition.
