About Timothy
I was one of those lucky teachers whose own children attended my classes. It was fun for me to see their eyes light up when they suddenly understood a difficult concept or saw how an irritatingly complex law of nature (or economics, or English grammar) was applied to solve a social problem or make an important point to a recalcitrant audience. After an economics lecture one day, my son told me his friend who was sitting next to him and said, “Wow, your dad just explained WWII, the Cold War and the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War as the results of differing economic theories!” I always started each school year trying to set an environment that would invite questions from the students. For example, I would explain to my physics classes that the scientific method and engineering problem solving involve guessing first, finding out you were wrong and then checking to see how far off the guess was from the reality. Then doing the whole process again with a new (and better-informed) guess. So guessing wrong is how getting it right starts out!

Before I began my teaching career, I obtained a BS in forest management and started a tree service, climbing, trimming and removing trees from residential areas and spraying them for disease control. In my teaching, I can use examples (and stories) from this experience, along with other jobs I held doing landscape design and construction and working for an excavating company during summers while I was in college. My physics students seemed to enjoy my stories about, for example, using the coefficient of friction between a work rope and the bark on a tree trunk to lower a 1500-pound tree branch safely to the ground without damaging the roofs or electrical power lines below. And then there are the times that the physics DIDN’T work out as expected that make for some even more interesting (and usually funny) examples. Whenever I can, I like to use real-life examples of how physics, economics, biology or language skills are used in all kinds of professions. Then, when we do the math, it doesn’t seem arbitrary…it seems more meaningful.
